For the ‘Five Sense Brand’ 1st studio project we were asked to consider “brand as brand” and design a tattoo studio. Research showed that the 18-24 female was both an active – and growing – market segment. Often, the tattoos were strategically placed so that the owner / host could control the degree to which she exposed or concealed her tattoo.
My design approach focussed on the process of tattoo selection for the visitor, and a continued embrace of the notions of conceal | reveal. The selection process included an artwork preview projection onto the form of Aphrodite – the perfect female form – that was publicly displayed in the storefront, while a simultaneous private preview of the tattoo onto a 3D bodyscan image of the client was available on concealed monitors.
Overall, the studio design created space and flow for: reception; artwork selection; 3D bodyscanning; preview projections onto the form of Aphrodite; personal preview on computer stations; and the tattoo studios. The material sensibility for this project was sharp|soft and included woven metal work, meshes and curtains in soft and flowing, draped, forms.
