Teaching – Exhibit Design Studio “Walk the Talk”

July 22, 2020 by Naomi Clare

The following pages show student work, from the ‘Design for Non-Traditional Environments’ studio taught at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at George Washington University. In this class students are taught best practices for design in a group and client setting, including ideation, frequent presentation, feedback, critique and design development/iteration practices, through to practical design details such as floorplans, elevations and installation/production drawings and graphic layouts. The designs are grounded in a consideration of the audience engagement touchpoints […]

Human Rights Campaign National Dinner 2011

July 22, 2020 by Naomi Clare

For the Human Rights Campaign National Dinner 2011, their event message was ‘BE’ [a part of equality]. We interpreted this as with a design concept of ‘Reveal’; in the entrance tunnel experience a series of gates were emblazoned with word clouds made of terms that would finish a statement beginning with ‘Be’: Gay, proud, equal, true, loved, bi-sexual, engaged, married, and so on. In the silent auction settings we wanted to create a heightened sense of retail/ gallery space. We were inspired by […]

The Journey Home 2011

July 22, 2020 by Naomi Clare

The Journey Home is Baltimore’s 10 year plan to end homelessness. They had their first fundraising gala in 2011, and Hargrove was asked to help with the design and production of the event. After brainstorming with Chuck and Allison, we developed an overall design concept that guests experience a Journey throughout the evening, set in whimsical outdoor scenes that sought to heighten guest’s awareness of outside vs. inside. Much credit for the design direction here must be given to Chuck and […]

2012 Cherry Blossom Festival Centennial

July 22, 2020 by Naomi Clare

The 2012 Cherry Blossom Festival Centennial was the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Gift of Trees. The stage set was inspired by an abstracted ‘shoji’ panel grid, carrying cherry blossoms and two large cherry trees that flanked the stage. The translucent white sheer drape travelled to open and present a field of 100 blossoms as a backdrop to the evening’s perfomers, who included the Washington Ballet, and Sara Bareilles. The Hargrove team was led by Tiffany Ball, Account Executive, and included Katie […]

American Kidney Fund – A Hope Affair

July 22, 2020 by Naomi Clare

Working with my favorite event planners in the whole world – Bravo! Events – the Hargrove team conceived and designed this event inspired by the tagline ‘anything is possible’. The evening’s honoree was a young lady who had won the AKF calendar competition with her whimsical drawing of a cow jumping over the moon – it was incredibly cute and we were inspired: We channelled this sense of child-like wonder and hope and fused this with an illustrative, yet elegant, approach to create a […]

Orientalist Art Events

July 22, 2020 by Naomi Clare

This was an exhibit design – event design hybrid project that was executed in two locations, Washington D.C. at the Mellon Auditorium and in New York at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The exhibit featured a world class collection of orientalist art and the events included a symposium of thought leaders and gallery-opening-style evening reception. On the design side we were responsible for defining not only flow and space planning for the exhibits, but also graphic design development and created the foundation’s […]

Human Rights Campaign National Dinner 2012

July 22, 2020 by Naomi Clare

The 2012 HRC National Dinner took the statement “Make Equality Count” as its tagline. We interpreted this as design concept of Volume | Volume –  the idea of a convergence of multitudes to create a mass momentum. The look and feel of the party overall was to embrace a kind of art haus | warehouse party, glowing cubes and ‘pixels’ created a motif throughout. This was an amazing night and a huge scale event to watch emerge, come to life, within the convention […]

Let Freedom Ring! 50th Anniversary Celebrations

July 22, 2020 by Naomi Clare

Design work on the Let Freedom Ring! 50th Anniversary Celebrations of the March on Washington was comprehensive – from concept and creative development, to artwork for logos, letterheads, programs, signage, tickets and credentials, to banners, graphic walls and stage presentations of varying sizes and formats. Though not all of the initially envisioned events took place in the end, the following images show how a core concept for creative was cohesively conceived and consistently applied across a myriad of experience touchpoints. The core […]

Public Space Signage – Visual Communications

July 22, 2020 by Naomi Clare

Led client team from initial ideation to design development of artwork for U.S public space signage at the Hannover Messe 2016 exposition. This was the first time the U.S. has served as the the official partner country for the fair since its inception in 1947, and the first time a sitting U.S. president has participated. Three concepts were generated for simple, elegant and impactful artwork treatments, then reviewed and refined by committee. The art was to feature US corporations as […]
