I’m excited to share the invitation for the exhibit opening of ‘The Pleasure of Light’ (below) which includes my work ‘ReAnimating the Light Prop’ (selected still above). The exhibit opening takes place on September 2nd, followed by a conference on September 3rd, and runs runs through November 21st. My work is a digital color recreation of Moholy Nagy’s light prop stage show and estimates what a visitor to the Bauhaus 1930 exposition may have witnessed.

The object – a Pendant by Gorham Silver  - is suspended and lit within a glass sphere, hung from the ceiling of the Michael, Ann & Amelia Spalter gallery at the Museum. In this state it is viewable ‘in the round’ as a tiny sculpture. The wall text provides a visual backdrop: as one looks at the object it can be seen against images and text describing the historical, cultural and artistic context of the pendant. Visitors are provided with a map and invited to use their magnifying glasses to examine the details of other works of art in the Museum’s collection.

This past semester my assistantship was ‘Director of Curatorial Assistants’. I coordinated the activities of seven Curatorial Assistants in producing three shows: the biggest of which was the Department of Interior Architecture’s exhibit at RISD’s Graduate Thesis Show. For the first time, our department had been asked to present work via digital projection. We were initially concerned that our work – by its nature three dimensional – would be misrepresented when projected in 2D form on a surface. So we proposed working with the existing exhibit system to cut the front walls  of our projection room.  This helped keep the room filled with light, connect the interior with the exterior. Concept models and portfolio books for the graduating students were displayed, encouraging interaction. DWR was kind enough to donate seating so that visitors could sit a while, read the books that the students had made, and comfortably watch the movie projections on the walls.  Designed for a client in 2006, cabinetry was built by Peter Trumbull Crellin in 2007. Painted poplar,  mahogany trimmed. The kitchen is in a high victorian home in Cambridge, MA. The upper display cabinets were lit to provide a lift to the room beneath the crown molding, the cabinets running flush to the ceiling to accentuate the height of the room and maximize storage in this somewhat tight space. The warmth of the mahogany trim contrasts with the cool green/grey paint color, and in conjunction with the upper and under cabinet lighting, produces a serene yet visually stimulating kitchen. 

  

Made during the Shape and Form in Metal class this wintersession. 20 gauge steel sheet, cold formed using the english wheel, hammer and anvil, punched and engraved. Sand Dollar functions as a tray; twist to release the top from the base.

 Attached is an article I wrote for RISD’s contribution to the FormZ Joint Studies report, which compares the processes of modeling in a virtual environment with the tools used for physical creation in the wood shop.
